“IT’S BEEN TWO WEEKS, MYA,” Kelsey pointed out as we stood in front of the mirror in the break area of Duke & Duchess.

“It’s been thirteen days and I’m not calling him,” I replied, smoothing the loose strands of my hair upward into the high ponytail.

Kelsey looked at me seriously. “You’ve been miserable,” she pointed out, her voice lowering to a softer tone. “You may be able to fool everyone else, but you’re not fooling me. I know you. And let’s not forget, the night you ended things with Colton, you called me in the middle of the night—”

“It was almost five in the morning,” I corrected her, trying to lighten the mood. The smile on my face was forced, but it was there.

She rolled her eyes and continued, “You called me at five o’clock in the morning to tell me how big of a mistake it was to hook up with him. You were yelling and talking all this shit on the phone and when I arrived at your house, your eyes were so sad. No matter what you kept saying, I just saw the sadness in your eyes. And the sadness is still there.”

“I’m fine, Kelsey,” I lied, walking toward the door. “Let’s finish up this shift and then figure out what we are going to do for Devin’s birthday party tomorrow.”

Because Devin’s family had to cancel their planned trip to visit New York from Japan, in less than a week, Nicks planned a surprise party for Devin’s thirtieth birthday. Nicks was in charge of the entertainment since he’s known Devin the longest. Stephen was in charge of the guest list since he’s one of Devin’s best friends. Rhiannon and Jessica were in charge of the cake and food because it was the easiest task to handle. Kelsey and I were in charge of the music because we had the best taste in music.

“It sucks that his family couldn’t fly in,” Kelsey pouted. “But tomorrow is going to be awesome!”

The last couple of hours flew by and I was exhausted by the time we closed the bar. Sitting in one of the VIP sections, we verified that we were starting the party at six o’clock and going until ten o’clock, before opening Duke & Duchess up to the public.

“So Ryker is going to pick up Devin and tell him they are grabbing a birthday hotdog or something,” Nicks started.

“And then Ryker and Devin will get here and fifty people will jump out and scream surprise,” Kelsey continued.

“What do you want us to wear? I saw a couple of Devin’s frat brothers and they are hot,” Rhiannon said.

I rolled my eyes.

“Wear black. All black,” Nicks instructed. “After the party, we’ll have work to do.”

We ended the meeting and then Kelsey and I started the ten minute walk back to my place. We talked about the DJ we hired and then the surprise musical guest we didn’t tell anyone about.

“Devin is going to lose his mind when we announce Teen Spirit as the musical guest.
